Internet of Things

The majority of people are not sure about the meaning of IoT...

In simple terms IoT is the Internet of Things. Which is any type of device with an internet connection.

Device connections are either by network cable, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

Internet of Things Devices are Split into Two Types.

The Internet of Things (IoT) are smart devices which interact, with other devices using the internet. They work by granting remote access to a user for managing the device.

Smart IoT controllers like...

Amazon Echo, Google Home Voice, Apple Siri, Mobile phones, etc

Smart Consumer Electronic IoT Devices like...

Smart watches, Fitness trackers, TVs, Speakers, Children's interactive toys, Baby monitors, Connected cars.

Universal remote controllers, Central heating controls, Temperature Controls, Air quality monitors.

Doorbells, Smart plugs, Security cameras, Bulbs and lighting systems, Locks, Smoke Alarms.

Stop for a few minutes and count how many smart devices you have....

The Booming Growth in Internet of Things Devices.

The prediction is there will be 3 smart devices for every person on the planet, by the end of 2021.

Current estimates are that around 29 billion devices will be connected to the internet by 2022. Of these an amazing 62% (18 billion) will be IoT Devices.

Twenty-five percent of smart-home products and IoT devices on home networks, are directly accessible over the internet.

With the growing number of IoT consumer household devices, this also increase the threat posed by unsecured IoT devices.

The Security Landscape of the Internet of Things Devices.

With the boom in network (IoT) devices, this has opened up thousands of opportunities for profit-driven cybercriminals.

A recent study by BitSight found home networks have seven times more malware, than an office network. On average BitSight found over 5 different types of malware on home networks.

The other concern is that 45% of companies had a device accessing it's network, from a home network with malware on it.

There are no world-wide standards for IoT security, which leaves security holes in thousands of devices. Which means that IoT product manufacturers are responsibility for security and are more concerned with selling products than protection.

Leading product manufacturers and service providers are committed to raising IT security awareness and understanding with their customers.

Criminals base their business models on the substantial number of poorly protected or completely unprotected IoT systems.

How Internet of Things affects you.

Individuals and small businesses are slowly waking up to the reality, that they are under cyber-attack — and need to improve their security measures.

Not everyone is aware that Smart Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices are all ways, that allow hackers into your network.

Once inside your Wi-Fi or Bluetooth network - hackers can gain access to all your connected devices, including your phone and laptop.

There is an urban myth or misconception that having Anti-virus keeps you safe.

Having anti-virus is like locking your front door and leaving all your windows open

Knowledge is power and having bespoke training based on your own personal assessment, will give you an advantage over others to stay safe online.
